70% of Cyber Security Professionals Predict Increased Spending on Data Security in Next 5 Years

RSA Conference Survey Conducted by Stealthbits Also Reveals New Emphasis on Effective Cyber Security Strategy and Tactics

HAWTHORNE, NJ, May 13, 2015 – Stealthbits Technologies Inc., a leading data security software company that ensures the right people have the right access to the right information, today announced the results of a survey conducted at the recently-held RSA Security Conference in San Francisco.

In addition to a broad consensus (70%) that enterprise data security investment will be increasing over the next 5 years, perhaps the most compelling survey result was the driving factor behind the anticipated increase in data security spending.

“Over two thirds of the survey respondents told us that threat awareness and protecting the organization’s reputation was driving data security investment increases, and less than one third indicated that compliance requirements were the primary motivator,” said Carol Volk, Stealthbits Vice President of Marketing and Product Management.

“Frankly, we didn’t expect that. Our survey was informal, but a working hypothesis could be that the string of high-profile breaches and rapidly increasing threat sources is triggering organizations to take data security much more seriously,” she said.

The security professionals taking the survey self-identified as senior-level (50%), and were remarkably candid. In fact, half admitted to experiencing a data breach within their organizations, 40% within the past 4 years. “We were very impressed by the honestly and genuine feedback we received,” added Volk. “It’s not easy for security professionals to admit they’ve been breached.”

The survey revealed that many (22%) felt “human error” was the greatest threat to their organizations. Moreover, the participants were candid about their existing data vulnerabilities, as only 16% indicated they “were aware of who has access to what data,” while only 15% “were aware of all the sensitive or proprietary data in the organization.”

Over 32,000 security professionals and others attended the week-long show, and Stealthbits asked its booth visitors to complete a short survey during their booth visit. “We linked the survey to a show raffle we were holding to make the process fun for our booth visitors,” noted Volk. “Although the process was designed to be enjoyable, we were very pleased with the serious insights we gleaned from the survey participants, some of which definitely surprised us.”

Stealthbits has developed an Executive Brief detailing the survey results, available for download by clicking here.
