Public Folders have been an integral collaboration tool for organizations over the past decade, primarily being used for content sharing and facilitating business processes. With the introduction of each new version of Exchange, Microsoft has attempted to de-emphasize Public Folders in favor of more suitable collaboration technologies (i.e. SharePoint), however, continued, broad-scale reliance on Public Folders across the Exchange install base has forced Microsoft to support Public Folders for the foreseeable future. Organizations have still found themselves in a quandary though. Public Folders represent a massive amount of unstructured data within the Exchange environment that organizations have little insight into, and even less knowledge of what to do with.
